Dragon Zheng’s Crossover Inquiry

By using botanicalsymbols to indicate sexual features, Dragon Zheng defines the existence of an erogenouselement, the dreamlike sensation, in artistic creation. Several years ago, hechose the current artistic direction with his explorative, hand-illustrated Personal Botany series, expanding thediversity and richness of artistic expression through the experiment. Thisritualized picture featuring the uncanny and still night reflects the painter’sestrangement from the world… Dragon Zheng’s works focus more on tracing thesubtle changes once undetected by his own mind. His experimental attempts doesn’tstop at forms, but probe into the question per se from various perspectives, which makes us marvel once again at the shining originality that is unique inthis young artist.

Behind Dragon Zheng’s intention to studyplants, there seems to be an ever-present subject that is yet to be revealed:the desire for sex and worship of reproduction. He boldly proposes an ideastill under experiment: creating a multi-media, dynamic oil painting with audioand photoelectric effects combined in a single piece. Among the original worksin the 2012 Graduation Exhibition, TheNight is the only oil painting that doesn’t look like one, but is actuallyworthy of the term. The motif is about living creatures wandering in the darknight. In the painting, Dragon Zheng combines the profile of plants with man’sphysical structure, endowing every item with symbolic meanings, and integratesthe picture with mysterious music whose rhythm changes with the light. Hiscreation puts forward a new issue brought about by his interdisciplinarylearning.

Easel painting has long been limited to two-dimensionalvisual reading, excluding the possibility of boundless expansion within thelimited space. In an age when technology is constantly renewed, contemporaryartistic creation has transcended the limits of easel painting to involvevarious media and materials such as photoelectric images and devices. In The Night II, Dragon Zhenghas combined oil painting with technology.By adding animation, LED devices and sound, he integrates modern technologyinto traditional oil painting and breaks through the confined space. As heshares his unique and personal artistic outlook, he also redefines ourunderstanding of traditional oil painting. In this work, the eerie music, thegradually-changing light, the unearthly landscape, the silent night and theflashing image – all seem to prowl around the weedy forest enlaced by vines. Withits colors, sound and breath, this luminous oil painting seems to imitate theevolution of a new being, providing us with an immersive experience.
